I think we can all agree that we want to expose our babies to as few harmful chemicals as possible.
But the diaper pail and dirty laundry that piles up with babies means that your nursery is going to need an odor eliminator of some sort.
The fragrance chemicals found in most conventional room deodorizers are not good for us or the environment.
And certainly not for our littlest ones!
So, we need some kind of natural nursery air freshener – a baby safe air freshener!
Whether you use a cloth diaper pail or a disposable diaper pail, you’re gonna need natural scents and a non-toxic home fragrance.
Maybe you’re wondering what’s so bad about conventional fragrances.
Well, the thing with fragrances in air fresheners is that they contain toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, chloroform, and many more which we then spray in our homes (or nursery!).
And the toxins just build up.
According to the Environmental Working Group, a recent study found that the air fresheners tested released an average of 18 chemicals into the air.
Many of these chemicals are not tested for safety.
Most conventional air fresheners use phthalates which have been linked to hormone disruption.
Definitely not things we want in our homes and certainly not in an air freshener for nursery!
So, here are some environmentally-friendly, non-toxic, bio-degradable solutions for natural room deodorizers. You may even find the best air freshener for nursery and the rest of your home too!

Natural Air Freshener Using Botanicals, Herbs, and Spices
If you want to go totally natural, the answer might be at the nearest essential oil shop, your local grocery, or even already in your cupboard!
Here are a few ideas to get you started:
- Diluted white vinegar (this one is a great organic option): use it to mop floors (but not finished hardwood!), wipe surfaces, or wipe inside your diaper pail – it’s cheap and in every grocery store!
- Baking soda (you can grab an eco-friendly packaged one here): always reliable odor neutralizer, probably already in your refrigerator and cupboard. Sprinkle in the diaper pail.
- Spices: Cinnamon is a great scent and these organic ones would be great to keep up high where baby can’t reach them! They also add a decorative touch.
- Potpourri: either store-bought or homemade. These days, potpourri is everywhere but you want to make sure you aren’t swapping one chemical scent for another. If you’re going to buy, look for one like this that uses essential oils, herbs, and wood.
- Extracts: vanilla, orange, almond, or any flavor. You don’t use much – a little dab goes a long way and can be used in a bunch of different ways. This coconut extract might even have you feeling like you’re on a tropical vacation!
Here too, a little goes a long way.
I recommend vanilla, lemon, lavender, or almond, but any fragrance you like would be good.
You can also look for scent combinations or try mixing them yourself.
I love that this brand marks the kid safe oils and are organic.
This blend may even help your little one sleep better (and what mom DOESN’T need that in her life?).
Burn these out of reach of children and objects that can catch on fire [fabric, paper, plastic, wood].
Look for soy wax candles or natural beeswax.
Why soy candles?
Because they are non-polluting, they are environmentally-friendly and safe for children.
This soy candle is even made with essential oils and is organic!
Beeswax candles (like these) are completely natural and have a sweet, honey scent, all on their own!

A HEPA filter is a great option if you want to freshen a room naturally.
It can also help with allergens and you might even need to dust less often!
They have become really affordable and make a great natural nursery air freshener.
Some of them (like this one) even come with UV sanitizer to kill airborne germs!
Open the Windows
This is something we don’t think about often but, really, opening up a window can quickly freshen a room (or the whole house!).
Sometimes the best room freshener is the easiest.
We need air fresheners because it isn’t always possible to open a window, but they don’t really remove the smells.
They just mask them for a while.
So, if the weather is nice, open the window turn on a fan, and let nature freshen your room!
Choosing the Best Air Freshener
There are so many alternatives to putting harmful chemicals into your baby’s nursery.
Even if your diapers sit for a couple of days between laundry days, there are eco-friendly, non-toxic ways to control odor.
You are helping your baby, as well as helping the planet with any of these choices.
And the best air freshener for your family will probably end up being a combination of options!
Maybe you need a plug in air freshener for some rooms, a HEPA filter, and deodorizing cleaners.
Whatever you choose, you can feel confident that you’re helping the environment and providing a cleaner, safer, home for your family.
